Around Halle Gate and looking for a few good spots to eat, shop or simply spend some time? You’re in the right place! Here are a few local gems you definitely shouldn’t miss.
Hallepoort: de toegangspoort tot de Marollen
Looking for a brasserie or bar around Halle Gate?
Looking for a friendly spot where you can enjoy a good beer, play table football or darts, grab some fresh and tasty food or watch a football match with friends? Head to Knop. They have everything you need for a great evening.
You can also settle in at Le Bistro, a cosy, industrial-style brasserie spread over two floors. It serves Belgian beers and traditional Belgian dishes and also has a small terrace.
If you have an extra five minutes to walk over to Place du Jeu de Balle, make sure to try the house-brewed beers at Mazette, along with their ultra-local food – they even make their own bread and cheese. Their hidden terrace gives the place an extra dose of charm. In the evening, you can play one of the board games available or, depending on the programme, enjoy an artistic performance or another event. There’s always something going on at Mazette.
Looking for somewhere to keep the night going until late? Try Mouton Bleu, just around the corner from Mazette. And don’t be surprised if your evening ends with an impromptu karaoke session…
Looking for a restaurant?
Fancy a small Italian restaurant before heading out for the evening? Try Le Gusto on Boulevard de Waterloo. Prefer a seriously tasty quick bite? Head to Menzili on Rue Haute. Expect quick, friendly service, plenty of choice and fresh ingredients.
If you’re looking for a halal restaurant run by owners who are well known and appreciated in the neighbourhood, head to Flower Food. The menu offers plenty of choice, from pasta and pizzas to brunches and other options.
Time for a little shopping
And if you still have some time, make the most of it by doing a little shopping in the Marolles. The neighbourhood is famous for its daily flea market on Place du Jeu de Balle, a Brussels institution that has been around for decades. But there’s much more to discover: wander through its many antique shops and second-hand stores, from affordable vintage finds to designer and even luxury pieces.
The golden rule? Take your time. Step inside the shops, look around, touch – when allowed –, try things on, rummage and see what you find. You never know what you’ll end up taking home: a blouse, a bar of soap, a small piece of furniture that fits perfectly in your living room, a lamp or a vinyl record.
In the Marolles, anything is possible!
