The Royal Theatre of Toone is the last traditional puppet theatre still active in Brussels. Founded around 1830 by Antoine Genty, known as “Toone,” it continues the tradition of rod puppets, or poechenelles, in the historic Îlot Sacré, just steps from the Grand-Place.
The shows, mainly in the Brussels dialect, blend humor, drama, and folklore. The theatre also houses a folkloric café and a museum tracing the history of puppetry. In 2024, it received the European Heritage Label, recognizing its cultural and historical significance.
