Dive into the atmosphere of ‘Bockstael’, in the commune of Laeken, a family-friendly and popular neighbourhood with numerous local shops.

Did you know that Laeken’s town hall was only used from the date of its inauguration in 1908 to 1921, when Laeken was annexed by the City of Brussels? This imposing building was designed to be the landmark of a new neighbourhood and the centre of urban modernism. Its bell tower remains an example of the former commune’s solemnly ostentatious style, while respecting the glorious styles of its past.

Set off on a colourful walk packed with diversity, down the neighbouring streets that were created at the same time as the ‘place Bockstael’ which offer a festival of different architectural styles. From Art Nouveau, via Art Deco and Neo-gothic, to Modernism, the owners of the Brussels-style houses there are all keen to give a personal touch to the facades of their homes, to make sure they stand out from the crowd.

And stand out from the crowd they certainly do! Butcher’s, bakeries, fishmongers, coffee merchants, bicycle sellers and even pet shops all rub shoulders here. Would you believe the neighbourhood has over 400 shops! On Saturdays, the stalls of the biggest market in the ‘North of Brussels’ are a great place for a relaxing stroll.
