André Waterkeyn - 1958 | The building was designed and built for the Brussels World Fair (1958), for which it was the flagship and emblematic building. With the slogan “bilan d'un monde, pour un monde plus humain” (“balance sheet for a more human world”), Expo 58 was intended to be the expression of the democratic will to maintain peace between all nations, of faith in both technical and scientific progress and, last but not least, of an optimistic vision of the future of a new, modern, hyper-technological world that should enable people to live better lives. It was this vision of the peaceful use of atomic energy for scientific purposes that resulted in the design and construction of the Atomium.
